ERF Next Generation Managers share their experiences acquiring and managing institutional assets and how they have successfully grown their businesses.

Wendell E. Mackey

Founder,
Channing Capital Management

Wendell E. Mackey

A founder of the firm, Wendell E. Mackey, CFA, has more than 22 years of investment experience and is Portfolio Manager of the Small and SMID Value Products for Channing, both of which he launched for the firm. Previously, he was senior managing director at Valenzuela Capital Partners (now Lombardia Capital Partners), a small- and mid-cap equities boutique, where he co-managed the firm, including assets and research staff. He was also a portfolio manager with Barnett Capital Advisors, responsible for mid/large cap institutional assets, and a portfolio manager at NCM Capital Management Group responsible for the Calvert Social Investment Managed Growth Fund and the Calvert CRI Balanced Fund.

Mr. Mackey received a B.B.A. from Howard University, and an M.M. from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University. Mr. Mackey is a former board member and chair of the Audit Committee of the CFA Society of Chicago. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

JoAnn H. Price

JoAnn H. Price

Ms. Price is a member of Fairview’s investment committee and a manager of all Fairview-sponsored funds. Prior to co-founding Fairview, Ms. Price served as president of the National Association of Investment Companies headquartered in Washington, D.C. Ms. Price serves on a number of national advisory committees and private equity advisory boards. She is currently on the Howard University Board of Visitors and the YMCA of Greater Hartford Board of Directors.

Ms. Price is also the Vice Chair of the Apollo Theater Foundation and the Chairperson of the Amistad Center for Art & Culture in Hartford, Connecticut. Ms. Price is a graduate of Howard University.

Michael Torres

Michael Torres

Mr. Torres is Chief Executive Officer and portfolio manager for Adelante. He has 29 years of real estate and securities research experience. Prior to joining Adelante, Mr. Torres was the Director of Real Estate Research and a portfolio manager for Wilshire Asset Management. At Wilshire, he created the Wilshire Real Estate Securities Index, which is widely recognized as the industry’s performance benchmark.

Mr. Torres is currently an active member of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), Urban Land Institute (ULI), and YPO/WPO International. Mr. Torres serves on the Board of Directors of Renova Therapeutics and Colovore LLC; Investment Committee for the Stern Grove Festival Foundation, as well as on the Northern California Advisory Board for City National Bank. Mr. Torres received a B.A. in Architecture and an M.B.A. from University of California, Berkeley.

Cherrise Cederqvist

Cherrise Cederqvist

Cherrise Cederqvist joined Prudential in 2013 to oversee the Emerging Manager Investment Program. Prior to joining Prudential, Ms. Cederqvist was a Managing Director at Principal Global Investors where she was head of Business Strategy, encompassing Product Development and Acquisitions. Prior, she worked in various institutional sales and marketing roles at Credit Suisse Asset Management, Oppenheimer Capital and UBS Asset Management.

Ms. Cederqvist has a B.A. from University of Rhode Island in Psychology. She received her MBA from Columbia University.

Jason Lamin

Jason Lamin

Jason is the Founder of Lenox Park Solutions and oversees all aspects of the firm’s Advisory business. Before founding Lenox Park, Jason was a Director in Merrill Lynch’s Fixed Income Structured Credit group in New York. In that role, Jason was instrumental to Asset Management due diligence for a highly selective Investor base. He began his career in Investment Banking working on M&A transactions for Financial Institutions, then helped launch a start-up group in London focused on deepening Merrill Lynch’s most lucrative institutional client relationships. Jason graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Economics. He is an active member of the United Nations Private Sector Forum, the World Policy Institute, Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs and an active volunteer in his community in New York. In 2008, Jason founded Nyawa Funding Group, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with a mission to improve living standards in Sierra Leone.

Sharmila Kassam

Sharmila Kassam

Sharmila Kassam, Esq., CPA, is the Deputy Chief Investment Officer for the Investments Division at the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS). She works closely with the Chief Investment Officer and staff managing investments in all asset classes to develop internal best practices, analyze asset allocation, oversee external management, and pursue new initiatives. Sharmila is a liaison between internal and external stakeholders working on policy and agency strategic initiatives, including the $25 billion pension trust and $2 billion Texa$aver 401(k) / 457 Program, the voluntary defined contribution plan for employees of state agencies and some higher education institutions. Prior to her current role, she served as an Assistant General Counsel at ERS for five years during the initial stages of its private equity program, leading legal negotiations with multiple fund sponsors and later working closely with the private real estate and hedge fund teams as they developed their programs.

Before joining ERS, Sharmila was an associate at Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati, focusing on securities, mergers/acquisitions, and corporate governance. She worked at multiple start-up and technology companies in financial and operational roles prior to entering the legal profession. She began her career as an audit associate at Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers).

Sharmila is a licensed Certified Public Accountant and also licensed to practice law in California and Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting, with honors, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas of Austin.
